There are five digits to the solution code for this puzzle, one from each gemstone.
The hint card shows you how to arrange the gemstones. Each gemstone gets a turn to be in the center. The solution code digits go from shortest gem name to longest.
When you make your five arrangments of gemstones, the cards will always be oriented vertically and right-side-up.
There's a four-letter word on a white strip at the center of each card. This word indicates how to arrange the other cards when this gemstone is in the center.
The four letters in the four-letter words each indicate one of the other gemstones.
The four-letter words correspond to placing the other gems clockwise in this way: Top, Right, Bottom, Left.
Each letter in the four-letter word can be found in one of the other gem names. Although some letters are in multiple gem names, there is only one way to interpret each four-letter word correctly.
JAPE on the Ruby card indicates Jet, diAmond, toPaz, sapphirE, with Jet on top, Diamond to the right, Topaz below, and Sapphire on the left.
When you place the cards in the right way, the arrows will point to letters on the surrounding cards. BATH corresponds to ruBy, diAmond, jeT, sappHire, and the green arrows point to Z-E-R-O, giving one number of the code.
